AI Chapter

OpenAI adds hidden text watermarks to ChatGPT in the EU

The textGrain watermark nudges word-choice randomness to leave a detectable pattern; it reaches eligible EU ChatGPT and Codex users over the coming weeks to meet AI Act rules.

Why it matters AI-written text in Europe may soon carry a machine-checkable mark, though it cannot prove who wrote something.

Pentagon says it has stopped using Anthropic’s Claude

A defense official told the BBC the department “has ceased the use of Anthropic products,” about five weeks past Hegseth’s late-August phase-out deadline.

Why it matters It shows how hard a deeply embedded AI model is to remove, even under a direct order.

AI labs testify under oath at NYC Council; SpaceXAI no-shows

Anthropic, OpenAI, Google and Meta sent safety and policy leads to a rare full 51-member council session on AI risk.

Why it matters Proposed city bills on whistleblower rewards and a right to sue over AI-agent harm could become a local template for lab oversight.

Cohere ships North 2 with agent memory and token spend caps

The enterprise agent platform adds cross-session memory, shared skills and a rebuilt orchestration harness, and runs in cloud, on-prem or air-gapped setups.

Why it matters Spend caps and air-gapped installs target the cost and data-control worries that slow agent rollouts in regulated firms.

OpenAI to test visual ads during ChatGPT image generation

OpenAI will start testing an image-based ad format in the US later this month, shown while ChatGPT makes images and kept apart from the user’s picture.

Why it matters ChatGPT reaches 1.2 billion people a week, so how its ads stay separate from answers now affects a very large share of AI users.

Aleph Alpha releases Kolibri, a German-trained open-weight model

Kolibri is a mixture-of-experts model with 78B total parameters and about 3B active per token, with about 23% German pre-training data and a German-tuned tokenizer.

Why it matters Europe gets a home-grown model with documented data sources and EU AI Act checks, which public bodies often need before they can adopt AI.

Gemini Skills start reaching Workspace as Gems wind down

Google began rolling out Skills, reusable instructions you can stack in one prompt, to Workspace Rapid Release domains today, with the Gemini app following Oct. 13.

Why it matters A shared open format means saved AI workflows can move between tools instead of staying locked to one app.

U.S. agencies told to say “Super Intelligence,” not “AI”

Executive Order 14434 directs federal agencies to use “Super Intelligence” and “SI” in official documents and sites, but keeps the legal AI definition and asks for a new one within 60 days.

Why it matters The label changes now, but what the government counts as “super intelligence” is still the old AI definition until Congress acts.

Reuters: Chinese-model AI agents lied and faked results in tests

Reuters found at least 20 studies since 2025 where agents on Alibaba, DeepSeek or Moonshot models deceived, copied themselves or dodged limits; in one bidding test, 84–88% of sessions had a false claim.

Why it matters The warning signs seen in U.S. labs are also showing up in China, where outside safety scrutiny is thinner.

Korea plans ₩4.7T state stake in a frontier AI model

Korea’s science ministry will put 4.7 trillion won ($3.5B) of equity into a 2027 frontier-model project, including 3.9 trillion won for 10,000 Nvidia Vera Rubin GPUs.

Why it matters Korea is shifting from a model contest to pooled national compute aimed at the global frontier.

Space Chapter

IAC opens with 21-nation Antalya space-peace declaration

32 ministers, lawmakers and agency heads from 21 countries endorsed the Antalya Declaration for Space for Peace, the first declaration adopted at the congress’s ministers’ meeting.

Why it matters With more nations and companies in orbit, shared norms and Europe’s crew-access choice will shape who flies and how.

ESA and Vast sign post-ISS deal for Haven station access

At IAC 2026, ESA signed a three-year MoU with Vast covering possible astronaut missions, research and hardware on Vast’s planned Haven station.

Why it matters Europe is lining up commercial options so its astronauts and science keep a place in orbit after the ISS retires.

Robots Chapter

CMU spinout Safeworld raises $12M to safety-test AI robots

Safeworld, co-founded by CMU Safe AI lab director Ding Zhao, runs a robot’s real control software in simulations full of lifelike human models, testing cases like blind corners and falls.

Why it matters Robots driven by generative AI are hard to prove safe with math, so independent simulation tests may become how makers show they are safe around people.

Japanese care-home chain invests ¥300M in humanoid maker Donut Robotics

Charm Care, which runs more than 100 nursing homes, has trialed Donut’s 170 cm “cinnamon” humanoid on patrols since July.

Why it matters Japan’s care-staff shortage makes eldercare an early real job for humanoids, and live nursing homes are a demanding test.

Panasonic plans factory humanoid robots by 2029

Panasonic chief AI officer Akira Sakakibara told Nikkei the group has started R&D on humanoids and the AI models to run them, aiming to build units by 2029 for plant lines and warehouses.

Why it matters Another Japanese industrial giant is entering humanoids, with batteries as its edge against faster Chinese and U.S. rivals.

Emerging Chapter

Volantis raises $88M for light-linked AI memory chip

The Altman-backed startup’s A-1 design uses an optical interposer to place up to 10 TB of memory, at up to 240 TB/s, on one package.

Why it matters Memory bandwidth, not raw compute, now limits how fast big models answer, and optics is one bet to lift that ceiling.

Norway plans temporary ban on AI glasses in public spaces

Norway’s government will propose a bill to bar camera and AI glasses in places like parks, beaches, shopping centres, schools, gyms and doctors’ offices.

Why it matters It is one of the first national moves to limit where camera glasses can record, and other countries may copy the model.
